Cookies in Playa del Carmen: what to look for on the avenue

Written October 2026 — before our doors open.

Quinta Avenida in Playa del Carmen is one of the great walking streets of Mexico: five avenues’ worth of people drifting north from the ferry pier, an ice cream in one hand, looking for the next small thing to eat. If the thing you want is a cookie, you can find one here — but you have to know where cookies hide.

Where cookies fit today

The avenue and the streets just off it are well served by bakeries — French-style ones, an Argentine one a couple of blocks over, neighborhood panaderías — and they are worth the detour. But in all of them a cookie is one item on a counter of croissants, cakes and medialunas. It was usually baked early that morning for the breakfast rush, and by the time you walk by in the afternoon it has been sitting in the case for hours. Supermarkets and OXXO carry the packaged kind. Neither gives you what a cookie is at its best: warm, baked that day, and the whole point of the shop.

The appetite is not in doubt. When a US cookie chain opened its first Mexico City shop it sold out on day one. Playa del Carmen simply has no shop of its own where cookies are the only thing made.

What to look for in any cookie shop

However you get your cookie on the avenue, three questions are worth asking. Was it baked today, on the premises? Is it priced by the cookie, so you can try one without committing to a box? And if you want to take a half-dozen back to the hotel or the rental, is there a box — not a paper bag that steams them soft on the walk home?

What we are building

Expert Runnel is a cookie shop opening in 2027 on Quinta Avenida, and it exists to answer yes to those three questions: one baker baking on site all day, one cookie at 70 MXN or a box of six at 420 MXN, boxed so it survives the walk to the beach. Until the doors open, the way to get the first cookie is the Opening List on our home page: leave your email, confirm it, and on opening day you show the code at the counter for a free cookie.

If you run a small hotel or a holiday rental in Playa del Carmen, the same shop will deliver welcome boxes for your guests — a page for that arrives with the rest of the site. Until then, the home page tells you everything that exists today, honestly.

Expert Runnel is built and run end to end by AI agents on NanoCorp, which is how a one-founder shop on the avenue can keep a website this current.
